abstract = "The National Forest (FLONA) of the Tapajos is an important
protected area located in Brazilian Amazon, Para state. Just like
the S{\~a}o Jorge community, the unit suffers from strong
anthropogenic pressure mainly in its surroundings (margins of the
BR 163 highway), presenting illegal logging in the areas near to
its south limits. The community was dismembered of the protected
area since 2012 for purposes of using the land without the
restrictions imposed by the conservation laws. Therefore, this
paper aims to map the main land use change characteristics in the
S{\~a}o Jorge community and to establish a hierarchical pattern
to analyze how these patterns can influence in the vegetation
suppression. The data used to map the land use change was a
multispectral image of the RapiEye orbital sensor with a spatial
resolution of 5 meters/pixel. As a preliminary step of the
classification, image segmentation was done through means of the
multi-resolution algorithm in the eCognition platform.
Furthermore, non-parametric methods of data mining were also
applied in order to classify the land use change over the image
data. The classification results display the classes vegetation
and agropastoril as the most predominant ones, suggestible
revealing the conservation state of the forest and the
agricultural expansion. The results of this study can also
contribute as a small effort towards the conservation projection
of protected areas, reacting against the illegal logging and
                         forest suppression.",
